Galerie Magda Danysz
Vhils' artistic practice consists essentially in appropriating the surfaces of the city. The city is an organic, living, complex material in constant mutation, and the urban landscape is its skin. The exhibition at Galerie Danysz features, for the first time, works by Vhils made from ceramic tiles. As usual, Vhils delves into the local history of cities, bringing the past to light. In his homeland, ceramic tiles are symbols of heritage, culture and memory. With this new body of work, Vhils not only integrates this ancient tradition into his practice, he reinterprets and redefines it, giving it meaning by confronting it with his cultural identity and the urban challenges we all face in the 21st century.
Founded in Paris in 1991 by Magda Danysz, the gallery has been gathering steam since its Parisian debuts, setting foot in Shanghai, then London, to become a fully geared-up international player. A thriving trajectory with many achievements to date, and first and foremost many collaborations with talented artists: Futura, Vhils, Erwin Olaf, Zhang Dali, Faile and more.
The gallery fiercely advocates for an inclusive vision of contemporary art, in which artists across a wide range of practices can coexist. Its long-time support to artists hailing from urban art and its commitment to strong artistic personalities in photography, sculpture, new media, open up a rich and far-reaching vista into contemporary creation. Next to the roster of international artists that the gallery represents, its commitment also notoriously goes to young and emerging artists.
In all these endeavors, Danysz has been for 30 years a nexus of eye-opening contemporary creation. A place for art practices and ideas to constantly be discovered or rediscovered. For the years coming ahead, the plan is to continue to be just that: a catalyst for passion and imagination.
