2025 Study on the Relationships Between Galleries and Artists
12 Nov. 2025
The study on the relationships between galleries and artists, conducted by economist Nathalie Moureau, has just been published. Carried out as part of an academic research project, it provides a comprehensive overview of the gallery market in France and the relationships between galleries and the artists they represent. The full report is now available.
The results highlight significant differences between galleries affiliated with the CPGA and those that are not, both in economic terms and in the profile of the artists represented. CPGA member galleries have a noticeably higher turnover and represent proportionally fewer artists from the French scene, favoring European and American artists.
The study also reveals notable disparities in the ways galleries support their artists. CPGA-affiliated galleries formalize their contractual relationships with artists less often than non-affiliated galleries. They do, however, require greater exclusivity, while providing more comprehensive support at every stage of an artist’s career: relationship management, logistical support (notably for artwork storage), production assistance, communication around exhibitions and the artist’s work beyond the gallery’s programming, as well as proactive engagement with institutions.
This study contributes to a better understanding of the functioning of the art market and the diversity of professional practices among galleries.
